Hailing from Eugene, Oregon, born from hippie parents in a log cabin, Jans has followed a colorful path to being  a soul/funk singer and world percussionist. It all started with his parents disparate record collection: Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, King Sunny Ade, Billy Preston, Miriam Makeba, Sly Stone, The Persuasions, Al Green, etc. His thirst for authentic roots music led him to traveling the globe studying the drumming, singing and dancing of West Africa (Mail, Guinee, Senegal and Burkina Faso) Cuba and Brasil. For the last 14 years Jans has been performing, writing and producing for The Motet. Currently residing in Portland, OR, Jans has had the pleasure of performing with: Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones, Joshua Redman, Chris Wood, George Porter, Charlie Hunter, Dumpstaphunk, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, Karl Denson, John Fishman, Kai Eckhart, Adam Deitch, Grace Potter, Jeff Coffin, Jason Marsalis, Nicolas Payton, The Slip, Los Van Van, The String Cheese Incident and many others......
